Survey first for new boats - MSAF
APPROVED boat builders are instructed not to release any newly built vessels of 15 metres of less in length from their yard until they have undergone the initial survey and registration process.
The Maritime Authority of Safety Fiji has advised all maritime stakeholders, including vessel operators, ship masters, shipping companies, and marine service providers, boat builders and agents in their recent marine notice that most maritime incidents that occurred lately were from vessels that were not properly surveyed before they are put into operation.
MSAF said approved vessels may only be released if survey and registration certificates are produced.
“All current and potential vessel owners and operators must ensure that their vessels have a valid registration certificate and survey certificate at all times, together with all mandatory requirements,” the notice highlighted.
“This is to encourage compliance with Maritime Law and to avoid having incidents, accidents and mishaps at sea.”
MSAF said failure to comply would result in penalties and legal consequences under the Maritime Transport Act 2013.
“All stakeholders are expected to comply with these regulations to ensure that incidents from unsurveyed vessels are stopped.
MSAF added that maritime stakeholders applying for survey of ships of 15 meters or less in length, must ensure that all mandatory requirements are fulfilled and that the ship is ready for survey as specified in the Maritime (Fiji Small Craft Code) Regulations 2014.
Relevant forms and checklist must be filled and verified prior to payment of statutory fees.
Incomplete applications will not be accepted by the Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji.
The forms and checklist are available at all MSAF offices or can be downloaded from MSAF website www.msaf.com.fj
