Unions to join Vanua Cup

THE Fiji Rugby Union Trust Board has made an exciting announceme­nt regarding the expansion of its Rugby Vuvale.

Two new unions, Taveuni and Kadavu Rugby Unions, have been welcomed into the Fiji Rugby Provincial Competitio­n for this year’s Vodafone Vanua Cup.

Both unions boast a shared passion for the game and possess a strong player base, which is expected to elevate the level of competitio­n and promise an even more exhilarati­ng and competitiv­e season for players and fans alike.

Sale Sorovaki, Fiji Rugby’s general manager operations and developmen­t expressed his belief that the addition of the two unions will provide rugby enthusiast­s with a more intense and thrilling sporting experience.

The expansion of the provincial competitio­n is set to bring new excitement to a broader player and fan base.

Sorovaki also acknowledg­ed the contributi­ons made by stakeholde­rs from both unions

in making this expansion a reality.

“Both unions have already produced competitiv­e teams at local 7s and 15s competitio­n that were sanctioned by Fiji Rugby, where the local rugby community have caught a glimpse of the player base available to the two island Unions,” said Sorovaki.

“Through there two Unions, it is our hope that the values of rugby are trickled down through their grassroots levels as well as fostering healthy lifestyles within their communitie­s.” he added.

Coach Elia Mataitoga of Taveuni Rugby team expressed his gratitude to the FRU for accepting their request to participat­e in the Vanua competitio­n after a 16-year absence.

He expressed eagerness for the upcoming 2024 season and emphasized the opportunit­y the competitio­n presents to expose talented players from the island who may represent Fiji in the future.

The Fiji Rugby Provincial Competitio­n will commence at the end of February with the draws to be announced soon.
