New hope for women vendors Namoli Green Night Food Market opens
THE risk of being exposed to the elements and operating amid busy traffic are now a thing of the past for 25 women food vendors of Lautoka with the opening of the Namoli Green Night Food Market yesterday.
Minister for Local Government Maciu Nalumisa officiated at the opening of the facility in the Sugar City and commended the determination and perseverance of the women who once sold food parcels along the pavements and outside shops at the junction of Drasa and Namoli avenues
“These 20-25 women faced numerous challenges, including the lack of proper facilities and safety risks,” the minister said.
“Rather than displacing these women from their livelihood, the Lautoka City Council took proactive measures to provide them with a dignified space to sell their goods.
“The Namoli Green Food Market not only caters to travellers passing through Lautoka City, but also serves as a hub for local commerce, offering 64 stalls, seven cart spaces, three washing stations and seating facilities.”
Mr Nalumisa said the market would serve as a platform for aspiring entrepreneurs, particularly women, to engage in micro, small and medium enterprises (MSMEs).
Through initiatives and programs under MSME Fiji, vendors can access funding, training and mentoring, fostering economic empowerment and resilience within communities.
“The food market will allow the public to enjoy local cuisine and I am told that these women make some of the best food.
“Our aim is to create a platform to help incubate fresh new ideas by building opportunities for local businesses and bringing the community together.
“Discussions have already been undertaken with Tourism Fiji to have this food market promoted locally and overseas for local food and delicacies as a street food concept.”
