And then there were 4

Shortlisted candidates for Fiji XVs coach in 2nd round

- By JOHN CHETTY

THE search for the next Flying Fijians coach is in full swing, with the Fiji Rugby Union making significant progress in the selection process.

Four candidates have been shortlisted from a large pool of applicants and the four will be interviewed this week.

Fiji Rugby High-Performance Unit manager Barrie-Jon Mather said the level of interest in the role was high, noting that there were many applicants vying for the position.

“We are looking for someone who has international experience and someone who knows what the environment is like,” said Mather.

He adds former coach Simon Raiwalui has shown what it’s like to be in a RWC quarter final, so they are looking for someone who will know what it’s like to be in a semifinal.

“The shortlisted was down to four applicants, then the plan is to do a second round of interviews with maybe two of the successful candidates.

“This round will also include a visit to Fiji, where the candidates will have the opportunity to immerse themselves in the local culture and build connections within the rugby community,” said Mather.

“This visit is crucial in assessing their compatibility with Fiji’s rugby culture and their potential for forming strong bonds with the unions and players.

The timeline for the second interview round is yet to be confirmed, with Mather citing the candidates’ availability as a factor.

“We like to wrap up everything and get everything sorted out by mid-February so that they can get on the job and make the connections they need,” he added.
