Inspiration for resilience by never accepting defeat

- Aisha Azeemah’s inspiring Achievement piece (FT, Jan 28, 2024) about Dr Ilisoni Leweniqila’s belief and perseverance, despite failing Form 6 (Year 12), is a reminiscence about the recently inspiring brilliant Bollywood flick 12th Fail that has inspired mi

Incredible movie: Plot

2TH FAIL is a fantastic film that tells the inspiring narrative of Manoj Kumar Sharma, an Indian Police Services officer. The film skillfully portrays his path and how he overcame challenges to achieve success. Sharma’s resolute perseverance and persistent spirit served as the impetus for him to pursue his objectives, even after failing his 12th board examinations. The determination and unwavering spirit become the driving force behind the protagonist’s eventual success. Resisting negativity and pessimism Amidst a society characterised by doubt and pessimism, the protagonist’s narrative emerges as a symbol of resistance. Society has condemned the protagonist but underestimates his abilities to achieve success. The young Indian civil service aspirant reverses this notion and motivates us to go on with unshakeable confidence.

Power of restart: “Never give up”

The perseverance through failures of Dr. Leweniqila, his struggle to prove himself, and his sacrifice when parting from his family, happened for the sake of bringing this much-needed knowledge back to Fiji (FT, 28 Jan 2024). A similar narrative of the 12th Fail story serves as a beacon of inspiration for individuals facing academic failures, urging them to persevere and pursue their academic goal with discipline, patience and hard work.

The resounding message emerges that it’s never too late to start over, transcending arbitrary timelines imposed by society. The pursuit of dreams, regardless of age or background, becomes a timeless journey, echoing the spirit of “never give up” to achieve and face innumerable challenges of life.

Stereotypes and mental pressure

The protagonist’s trip prompts inquiries on the excessive burden and anticipations imposed on pupils, underscoring the need for a comprehensive and supportive educational setting that fosters individual aptitudes and interests. This suggests that success is not limited to academic accomplishments alone, but may also be achieved by other means, such as pursuing one’s passion, vocational training, or entrepreneurship, leading to a fulfilling and wealthy life. The movie examines the need for parents and society to embrace a more openminded attitude, allowing individuals to independently choose their own paths according to their interests and abilities.

Consistency, discipline, ethics, hard work and patience

The movie emphasises the message of consistent learning; despite facing obstacles in life, one has to show perseverance and persist in acquiring knowledge and developing one’s abilities. The concept of constant learning is crucial for personal development. Discipline is another trait to achieve success, as many distractions may block one’s way, but proper discipline is the key towards success. The concept of consistency is crucial, as the notion that consistent, incremental efforts may ultimately result in long-term success. Another factor is the significance of patience. Despite encountering several obstacles and disappointments along the voyage, one has to show patience and keep striving to achieve the goal.

Another lesson pertains to the significance of assimilating and progressing from our errors. The protagonist in the film had several setbacks yet remained determined to achieve progress. Despite adhering to a well-outlined plan, errors may unavoidably occur along our journey. One should welcome our mistakes and deficiencies as chances to acquire knowledge and develop. The movie also teaches the necessity of expressing gratitude towards those who provide for us throughout our pursuit of achievement. The movie underscores the significance of ethics, highlighting the need to adhere to honesty in our approaches, tactics, and regulations. The film also depicts the protagonist’s capacity to embrace criticism and transform it into a chance for personal growth.

Conclusion

It motivates us to persist, embrace the ability to “start over”, challenge sceptics, value support networks, and acknowledge the fundamental nature of education.

In a challenging environment that assesses our resilience, the movie’s protagonist and Dr Leweniqila, attempted to conquer the impossible by their unwavering belief, hard work, dedication, discipline and perseverance.

They may have failed and tried again to restart their struggle towards achieving success and acquiring success and dreams.
