Riverbank works end
RESIDENTS of Matanisivaro Settlement, Lami can safely access services after years of erosion from a nearby river following the completion of the riverbank protection work costing $344,384.75.
The Ministry of Agriculture and Waterways said in a statement that over the years, affected by riverbank erosion, residents have had to cross the river to travel to work and school and also access services on the other side.
Acting director for the Department of Waterways Livai Takali said the completion of the riverbank works marked a significant stride in the department’s mission to shield Fijian communities from the ravages of flooding and related hazards.
He said Government had earmarked $3.8million for a comprehensive drainage and flood protection program in the ongoing financial year.
“This initiative is aimed at strengthening the nation’s waterways management efforts, and the riverbank protection works in Qauia River is a vital component of this ambitious plan,” Mr Takali said.
“Fariza Holdings Pte Ltd secured the contract for the project with a total cost of $344,384.75.
“The project encompasses the construction of 70 metres of riverbank protection, featuring boulder toe protection work and gabion box.
“This strategic intervention aims to mitigate the adverse impacts of climate change in the Matanisivaro Settlement and the neighbouring Qauia Village,” added Mr Takali.
Resident representative 41-year-old Solomon Miller thanked the ministry for its commitment in carrying out the necessary works for river protection.
“We had to piggyback our children across the river and have feared for our safety in general as the eroding river bank had started taking bits of the footpath we walk on,” Mr Miller said.
By addressing the immediate threats posed by riverbank erosion, this initiative serves as a vital step towards creating a more secure and sustainable future for the residents of Matanisivaro Settlement and the surrounding areas.
