Improper planning ‘hazards’

- By REPEKA NASIKO

RURAL to urban drift was not considered in some developments within town and city boundaries, says Minister for Lands and Mineral Resources Filimoni Vosarogo.

During a recent visit to the Western Division, Mr Vosarogo said improper planning of developments could also cause hazards.

“We have to avoid ad hoc development where things are done in a mishmash, industrial zones right next to residential (zones) that may present hazards when developments are not monitored properly,” said Mr Vosarogo.

“In some quarters, this shows that city plans did not anticipate population growth and aggressive economic drivers and the huge rural to urban drifts like we have had for the past two decades.”

Mr Vosarogo said his ministry’s role was to ensure room for future growth and development.

“In its role as the custodian of foreshores in Fiji, the Ministry of Lands and Mineral Resources endeavors to gain a comprehensive understanding of the cities and town plans within various municipalities, encompassing both short and long-term perspectives.

“The primary goal is to ensure that these plans are formulated with a judicious and forward-looking approach, anticipating economic growth and allowing ample room for strategic growth.”

He added the ministry intended to facilitate development in areas such as Lautoka City.
