Call to arms

- FRED WESLEY

THE news that the Fiji Cancer Society (FCS) is aiming to raise the stakes on fundraising efforts in 2024 should serve as a reminder of the major challenges posed by this disease.

We acknowledge the call by CEO Belinda Chan for increased Government support.

The truth is, the fight against cancer cannot wait. There is some urgency needed. In fact, a lot of people are impacted by cancer. Families are staring at their loved ones who are suffering, and many feel helpless right now.

This fight needs our support. We all have a role to play in creating awareness, and empowering those who are leading the fight against cancer.

Ms Chan’s words paint a poignant picture.

There are over 200 patients relying on the FCS for crucial support, free services offered even as operational costs strain resources, and the relentless pursuit of filling gaps left by the healthcare system. The harsh reality is that we need action.

Acknowledging the immeasurable value of the FCS is critical. They go beyond simply treating cancer. They offer emotional support, guidance, and a community of understanding for patients and their families. This makes them a lifeline, especially for those in vulnerable situations.

So let’s heed Ms Chan’s call to action. We can play a part in supporting cancer awareness.

We can push for increased government support. The FCS highlights the “little gaps” they fill, areas where government resources fall short.

But then again, there should be recognition that the burden shouldn’t solely rest on the shoulders of a nonprofit organisation.

We look up to the powers that be for funding assistance. In saying that, we promote early detection to fight cancer. But that needs awareness campaigns that target the masses and gets that message across loud and clear.

Let’s create a culture of open discussion and support around cancer.

The fight against cancer isn’t just about securing funds or equipment; it’s about building a society that embraces empathy, resilience, and collective action. We should be advocating the need for us to ensure no Fijian battling this disease walks the path alone.

Let’s look to 2024 to be the year we step up for the Fiji Cancer Society and other organisations like Walk On Walk Strong Kids Fiji (WOWS).

They all need our support to drive the message of early detection for instance.

They all need our support to create awareness about what they stand for, and how we each can help families impacted by cancer. Sometimes, all it takes is for families to be reassured by the support they can get from such organisations.

That can go a long way to assist them to overcome their fears, and be reassured to provide that vital support base for their loved ones!

This is a fight we can, and must, win together.
