When hope blooms

- ■ FRED WESLEY

SRI Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital director Dr Krupali Tappoo, is hoping for better understanding, support, and compassion for those living with congenital heart defects.

As the week-long awareness campaign for congenital heart defect awareness was launched yesterday in Suva, she spoke about celebrating the resilience of people facing these challenges, and acknowledged the efforts of healthcare professionals, researchers, and support organisations.

Congenital heart defects, she noted, were the most common birth defects and affected one in every 100 newborns globally.

In Fiji, she said, this equates to 200 children being born every year and 2500 children in the Pacific.

In the face of this news, we reflect on what is a welcome splash of hope amidst the complexities of healthcare.

Parents gathered at the hospital yesterday to celebrate the successful surgeries of their children. It was a heartwarming scene which stands out as a powerful testament to the dedication of the medical team and the vital role the hospital plays in the lives of many families.

We have a story about Bulou Marisela Rokobuli, who was diagnosed with congenital heart disease at 10 and given a new lease of life through surgery.

Her mother praised the “exceptional care and expertise” of the hospital staff, echoing the experiences of many grateful families.

They speak highly about skilled medical professionals and the hope they ignite in the hearts of those facing major challenges.

But this is just one story. There are many others who have benefitted from lifesaving operations.

They provide hope for others who are facing similar situations.

It underscores the importance of the Sri Sathya Sai Sanjeevani Children’s Hospital in our healthcare landscape.

In a region where access to specialised pediatric care can be limited, the hospital stands as a beacon of hope, offering free screenings, health checkups, and life-saving surgeries for children with congenital heart defects.

Aside from providing these services, the hospital gives many children a chance at a healthy future. It also positively drives through the fact that such operations can be done right here in Fiji.

In saying that, we look forward to expanding awareness through community outreach programs and collaborations with NGOs and local health authorities about congenital heart defects.

We look up to the powers that be for continued investment in infrastructure, medical equipment, and staff training to set the base for better services and for pediatric cardiac care.

After all that is being said and done, there is a story of hope, dedication, and the potential for positive change right here.

We are reminded that even in the face of complex healthcare challenges, remarkable things can be achieved through unwavering commitment and collaborative efforts.

So as we celebrate successes, we should learn from experience, and strive to ensure that every child in Fiji has the opportunity to receive the life-saving care they deserve. May there be hope for us all!
