‘Communication key to success’
IN the lead-up to the OFC Olympic qualifiers in Samoa, overseas-based football enthusiast and player, Priya Singh, believes that effective communication will be the key for Fiji’s success in the tournament.
Singh, a 19-year-old living with her family in California, expressed her confidence in the team’s preparation.
“Our preparation has been good, we’ve been focusing on our communication which is something that’s really important when it comes to soccer, and I think once we get that done we will top the group,” Singh said.
Although not part of the 2023 Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands, Singh pinpointed communication as the Achilles’ heel during the gold medal playoff against Papua New Guinea.
Having made her national team debut in 2022, she spoke passionately about the personal connection to her home team.
“Since 2022, I’ve realized this is the team I should be a part of. My grandparents and parents grew up here before moving to California.
“I was born there, so representing my family and country is important to me,” she added.
As the team gears up for their first match against American Samoa tomorrow, Singh expressed admiration for the team’s positive and happy atmosphere.
“One thing we liked about soccer, I love how they always looking positive and happy all the time. They are always smiling or dancing or doing something that’s like just fun,” she explained.
Following the match against American Samoa, the side will face the formidable teams of Papua New Guinea on February 10 and the Solomon Islands on February 13.
“We have these three big games against PNG, American Samoa and Solomon islands but we have our focus, and our focus is to make sure that we come out on top.”
