CYBER bullying has reached an alarming level and is among one of the most pressing issues that faces the digital world - online abuse.

This was reported by the acting Commissioner of the Online Safety Commission, Tajeshwari Devi, during a celebration of Safer Internet Day in Suva yesterday.

“The statistics speak for themselves,” Ms Devi said.

“This is the 2023 statistics, so Facebook accounts were a staggering 57.58 per cent of reported incidents in 2023, closely followed by TikTok at 15.95 per cent.

“Other platforms like WhatsApp, Viber, Email, Messenger and Instagram also contributed to this alarming trend.

“This highlights the urgent need to create a safer digital space for everyone.”

However, Ms Devi said the Online Safety Commission had made progress in addressing this head-on with 67.41 per cent of reported cases closed through various actions such as sending Meta and TikTok removals or referring them to relevant authorities such as Cyber Crimes Fiji for further investigation .

“I am proud to announce that through our partnership with Meta and TikTok, we have successfully removed countless instances of online bullying content from their platforms.

“This collaboration is a testament to our commitment towards safeguarding the wellbeing of internet users in Fiji by joining forces with these tech giants.”

THE Online Safety Commission has become an essential component of the Fiji National Action Plan to prevent violence against all women and girls from 2023 to 2025 as part of its commitment to creating a safer digital space for all.

This was announced by Online Safety Commission acting Commissioner Tajeshwari Devi.

“This comprehensive plan aims to address the alarm rising out of online violence targeting women and girls,” Ms Devi said.

“The Online Safety Commission plays a pivotal role in implementing this action plan by providing education and awareness programs on online safety.

“We work tirelessly to empower individuals with knowledge on privacy settings, cyber-bullying prevention strategies and report mechanisms for harmful content.”

Ms Devi said in being part of this national initiative, the commission was taking concrete steps to foster a culture of respect and inclusivity online.

“Our goal is not only to protect women and girls from harm but also to create an environment where they can thrive without fear and intimidation, but our work doesn’t end here.
