ATHLETES selected to represent Fiji at the 2024 Paris Olympic Games in France later this year will have to pay a $1000 levy to be eligible to compete.

This was confirmed by Team Fiji’s chef de mission to the games, Sale Sorovaki, during a press conference in Suva yesterday.

“All athletes and officials who will be going to the Olympics in France later this year will have to pay a $1000 levy,” Sorovaki said.

It was also noted during the press conference that the costs of $15,000 per athlete/official will be split between the Fiji Association of Sports and National Olympic Committee, the national federation, and the Government.

Team Fiji will leave for France on July 11-12, where they hope to take a total of 70 athletes to compete in eight sports.

“We have already qualified in the sport of 7s and sailing, but we have been receiving expressions of interest from other sporting committees who want to compete as well.”

Meanwhile, FASANOC is still waiting for a handful of athletes to compete at various qualifying tournaments before they can name their team for the games.

“There are still a few qualifying events that our athletes are yet to compete in before we can select our team for the games.”

“We have our women’s football team in Samoa at the moment, with a few other qualifying tournaments for several other sports to be held in the coming months.”

“We have weight-lifting who will be competing at the Oceania Championships later this month in New Zealand, the 2024 Oceania Continental tournament for archery, and the World Swimming Championships in Qatar where we have athletes going to compete.”

Upon arriving in France in July, Team Fiji will be attending pre-games training camps, from where they will then head over to their Olympic Village (camps) on July 18.

“With the help of the Oceania National Olympic Committee, we have been able to confirm that we will be attending pre-games training camps.

“Also, we will be having our first medical checkup on March 2, with the final medical checkup being made on June 15.”

He reminded athletes looking to represent Fiji in the games to be mindful of their health and well-being.

“This is very important because it can decide whether or not you can represent the country.”

The Olympics is set to take place from July 26-August 11.
