Govind delves in magic
THROUGH the realm of magic Sonal Govind manages to intertwine illusions to captivate the minds of his audience.
The 26-year-old, who was fascinated with magic at the young age of 15, equipped himself with the skills and knowledge of magic to become one of the best illusionists in Fiji.
The Nasinu lad is currently pursuing his Bachelor of Arts (Hindi Honors) from the University of Delhi, India on an ICCR scholarship.
His scholastic pursuits has not prevented him from honing his magician skills, rather they fuelled his passion for magic even more.
“My magical odyssey commenced at the age of 15 when my fascination with the world of magic was ignited,” Govind said.
“I remember the very first time when I had gone to see a magic show performed by an international artist and got mesmerised with his acts that kept me awake for the whole night and the next day.
“I kept talking about how tricks like that can even be possible.
“I then immersed myself in magic shows, both through videos and live performances by international magicians.
“My passion further flourished as I delved into the pages of books dedicated to the art of magical entertainment.”
He diligently practised a variety of magic tricks at home and mastered different feats with unwavering dedication.
“This relentless pursuit of excellence led me to perform at gatherings, parties, birthday celebrations, wedding receptions, and various events, further enriching my magical repertoire.
“My growing proficiency eventually earned me a place on grand stages and at weddings, captivating audiences of varying sizes.
“In Fiji, I showcased my magical talents at festivals, carnivals, hotel functions, and religious gatherings, leaving an indelible mark on the hearts of those who witnessed my performances.
“I also gained recognition internationally in New Zealand and Australia after winning a magic show organised in Australia and since then I have done various magic performances in both countries.”
Govind said he faced huge challenges when he chose the path of magic.
“I didn’t have anyone to learn from, and not knowing much as I was just a young teenager, I did not lose hope in developing my passion,” he said.
“I chose to follow and became a self-taught magician.
“Also, it was very hard to get on stage to perform as people did not have faith in me as a young magician, so I had to face a lot of difficulties in order to get recognition in making a name for myself as a professional magician.
“Once I started getting recognition and faith from people, I started doing shows in weddings, parties, carnivals, and fundraising events. I was hired to do magic shows in Fiji, New Zealand and Australia.
“My future plan is to spread my popularity via shows and also assist in developing our local talents who have a passion to become magicians.”
He said magic was a unique form of artistry that captivated and inspired others.
“To become a successful magician, start with mastering classic tricks and techniques.
“Practise, practise, and practise, study the masters, develop your style, and hone your presentation skills.”
Govind’s next stage show will be held on March 1, 2024 at the Jagindra Singh Memorial Primary School in Tamavua.
