Celebration of rugby and support for development
AUSTRALIAN High Commission Ewen McDonald re-emphasized Australia’s existing support in both ends of rugby development and pathway in Fiji.
He hosted a reception at his residence in Suva yesterday for the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua team and management who were joined by students of the Latter-day Saints Technical College.
The event marked the celebration of shared passion for rugby between the two nations as well as Australia’s support for education in Fiji and providing opportunities for youths.
“I look forward to seeing the Fijiana and Fijian Drua reach new heights in the Super Rugby and Super W competitions this year. I reckon Fijiana are lining up for a hat-trick of premierships in just their third year in the competition and the men will be looking to continue their massive improvement after their historic finals appearance last year,” the high commissioner stated.
Through Team UP, the Australian Government has been supporting some core development programs including Get in Rugby PLUS.
“We have students from LDS who are participants of this program. This gathering signifies rugby’s ability to reach beyond the field of elite sports and to make a meaningful impact in children’s lives, helping them to grow into exemplary role models,” he added.
Also present was Fiji’s Prime Minister, Sitiveni Rabuka who wished the Drua players and management the very best for the Shop N Save Super Rugby Pacific season.
Meanwhile, the Drua play their first match against the Auckland Blues on February 24.
