Cagialau: Need for inclusive education
NATIONAL Council for Persons with Disabilities director, Lemeki Cagialau has highlighted the need for inclusive education and the mainstreaming of children with disabilities into regular schools.
“By promoting inclusive education, we can create environments where children with disabilities are fully supported and can thrive academically and socially,” he said yesterday during the official opening of the Suva Consultation for the Draft National Policy on Persons with Disabilities 2024 – 2033 at Grand Pacific Hotel.
Central to these efforts is the development and implementation of comprehensive policies aimed at providing holistic support for persons with disabilities.
“Together with the Ministry of Health, we will work towards the creation of policies that address the various challenges faced by individuals with disabilities, from early identification in early childhood education and independent living.”
Mr Cagialau also emphasized the importance of co-operation between government agencies and nonprofit organisations in addressing the needs of persons with disabilities.
“We are excited to announce our partnership with the Ministry of Health to implement initiatives that will positively impact the lives of individuals with disabilities across Fiji,” he said.
Furthermore, he outlined plans to collaborate on initiatives that facilitate pathways to tertiary education and skill development for persons with disabilities.
“Access to tertiary education is essential for empowering individuals with disabilities and enabling them to pursue their aspirations.”
In addition to education, he highlighted the importance of enhancing support services for caregivers.
“We recognise the critical role caregivers play in the lives of persons with disabilities, and we are committed to providing them with the necessary resources and support.”
Mr Cagialau concluded by expressing his optimism for the future of collaboration between the National Council for Persons with Disabilities and the Ministry of Health.
“Together, we can create a more inclusive and supportive society where persons with disabilities are valued and empowered.”
