Council evaluates naming tenders

- By ANASILINI NATOGA

THE Lautoka City Council is in the evaluation process, considering tenders for the naming rights of Churchill Park.

Chief executive Mohammed Anees Khan provided insight into the ongoing developments, affirming the scrutiny of the received tenders.

“We can confirm that the tenders received are being evaluated now. Once evaluation is complete, and the recommendation endorsed by the board, contract negotiations will commence with the recommended bidder,” Khan said.

Churchill Park, a venue with a rich history, has played host to successful international matches, including Super Rugby. The prospect of welcoming major events such as the NRL, rugby test matches, national and regional athletics competitions, and potentially a leg of the HSBC SVNS Series looms large on the horizon.

However, the current state of the venue has prompted concerns from both current and prospective hirers. With a capacity of 13,500, only 5000 are actual seats, while the rest comprise embankment or standing areas. The facility lacks quality seating, international standard floodlights, and adequate dressing room space.

Dating back to the 1970s, the venue lacks a permanent video replay screen and offers minimal hospitality facilities.

Recognising the need for a substantial upgrade, the council is actively pursuing a new sponsor to breathe life into the stadium. This move is poised to bring about a transformative change not only for the Western community but for the nation.

Khan further added the contract will have legal and commercial components.

“Once agreed by both parties and signed, then public announcements will be made. The above process will remain confidential until the public announcement,” he added.
