The strength of a mother

- By ZIFIRAH VUNILEBA

FOR Miriama Rasova, the support from her family, spiritual faith along with Bible sessions with other survivors have helped her in the journey as a cancer survivor and advocate.

Despite her battle against the disease, Miriama still carries out her motherly duties to her two sons aged 23 and 15.

With over 27 years of experience as a teacher and dealing with the loss of her husband more than 10 years ago, Miriama still finds the courage to carry on with her daily life. One of her priorities is ensuring she follows through chemotherapy and treatment to cope with the cancer.

"I have to keep looking forward to getting better for my two sons as I still have my duty as a mother to see to their future," she said. Another area she stresses and follows is the instructions given by the health personnel. She also believes in the medical treatment she receives from the health personnel to improve her standard of life. Miriama said she first started showing early signs of breast cancer in 2017 but thought it was for some niggling issues which would soon go away.

After first using forms of herbal medicine, she bravely decided to seek medical assistance.

Since undergoing surgery and maintaining her health reviews she has been advocating the importance of healthy living.

"I am eating more healthy now, especially food that will actually kill the thriving cancer cells in my body. So that's what I have been focusing on."

Having two sisters in the medical field has also been a form of strength for her as they use many ways and means to help Miriama. She said her sisters would send messages online giving tips and ways to help her in her fight against the disease.

Miriama also paid special acknowledgement to the weekly Bible sessions she has with other fellow cancer survivors.

"We share stories, and we get ideas on how to cope so we are able to manage issues in our daily lives."

These are some of the ways that have helped her stay strong.

She shared the discovery of another lump under her arm but the mother of two marches on through her faith and strength in God. "I have never backed down." It has never come to my mind that it's going to take my life soon because I know that there are brighter days ahead." The resilient advocate also shared advice with the hope of empowering other individuals.

She said cancer affects all men, women, and children so the need for vigilance is of utmost importance.

“Early detection while paying attention to your health and body will help you in the long run”, said Miriama.

She stressed the importance of nipping these matters in the bud by going to relevant health facilities and utilising the services to help one get better.
