Singhs discuss solar

MINISTER for Sugar and Multi-Ethnic Affairs Charan Jeath Singh recently met India's Minister for Power, New and Renewable Energy, Raj Kumar Singh to discuss the exploration of leveraging solar power for the benefit of Fijian communities.

During the meeting, Mr Singh unveiled Fiji's plan to extend grid energy to rural farmers and various communities using solar initiatives, such as the use of solar-powered water pumps.

He also highlighted on the possible solutions for drip irrigation for farmers, solar-powered irrigation technology and solar electrification for rural homes, particularly for farmers, and use of solar energy in certain section of sugar mills in Fiji.

Mr Singh also deliberated on Fiji's prospect of connecting with the International Solar Alliance (ISA), reinforcing their dedication to international collaboration in pursuing greener energy alternatives, as Fiji is a founding member of the Alliance.

He said the initiative comes at a crucial time, with the world increasingly turning to green energy to reduce carbon emissions.

Mr Singh from the Indian government said he was committed to sending a team from India to Fiji to assess opportunities for assisting Fijian communities in embracing solar energy solutions and identify various sectors where solar power can be most viable.

The Minister for Sugar expressed great enthusiasm for the commitment made by the Indian Government, highlighting the positive impact the project will bring to the people of Fiji in terms of sustainable development and commitment towards greener energy.

He added the bilateral meeting concluded with a positive outcome stating that the collaboration would pave the way for a greener, sustainable future for Fiji.
