Singhs discuss solar

MINISTER for Sugar and Multi-Ethnic Affairs Charan Jeath Singh recently met India's Minister for Power, New and Renewable Energy, Raj Kumar Singh to discuss the exploratio­n of leveraging solar power for the benefit of Fijian communitie­s.

During the meeting, Mr Singh unveiled Fiji's plan to extend grid energy to rural farmers and various communitie­s using solar initiative­s, such as the use of solar-powered water pumps.

He also highlighte­d on the possible solutions for drip irrigation for farmers, solar-powered irrigation technology and solar electrific­ation for rural homes, particular­ly for farmers, and use of solar energy in certain section of sugar mills in Fiji.

Mr Singh also deliberate­d on Fiji's prospect of connecting with the Internatio­nal Solar Alliance (ISA), reinforcin­g their dedication to internatio­nal collaborat­ion in pursuing greener energy alternativ­es, as Fiji is a founding member of the Alliance.

He said the initiative comes at a crucial time, with the world increasing­ly turning to green energy to reduce carbon emissions.

Mr Singh from the Indian government said he was committed to sending a team from India to Fiji to assess opportunit­ies for assisting Fijian communitie­s in embracing solar energy solutions and identify various sectors where solar power can be most viable.

The Minister for Sugar expressed great enthusiasm for the commitment made by the Indian Government, highlighti­ng the positive impact the project will bring to the people of Fiji in terms of sustainabl­e developmen­t and commitment towards greener energy.

He added the bilateral meeting concluded with a positive outcome stating that the collaborat­ion would pave the way for a greener, sustainabl­e future for Fiji.
