Settlement formlised resident await title
AROUND 115 households among the coast of Cuvu Sigatoka await the title to their land leases following the transformation of their settlement into formal housing.
As part of a broader strategy to address housing challenges and improve living conditions for marginalised communities, the initiative by the Government has gained appreciation from the local residents who now have access to proper infrastructure and essential services.
Khaiyum Dean, a long-time resident of Cuvu, shared that residents have been eagerly waiting for their land leases since 1978.
“We are thankful to the Government for improving the facilities. In the past we have had flooding due to improper drainage and other problems. Now thanks to the Government, we have proper roads, clean drinking water and proper drainage.”
“The installation of sewer lines and drainage systems has significantly reduced the occurrence of flooding, addressing a major concern that has impacted the community for years.”
“We never imagined that our homes would become proper houses with running water and electricity. This is a dream come true for us. We are grateful to the Government for recognising our needs and taking action.”
Another resident, Mohammed Janiff expressed similar sentiments and highlighted that the new infrastructure has made a huge difference.
“We no longer have to worry about flooding, and our homes are now connected to proper sewage systems. It’s a positive change that benefits everyone.”
“This change means a lot to us. We now have a sense of security and pride in our homes. Our children can study better with proper lighting, and we have access to clean water. It’s a new beginning for our community,” he said.
Mr Janiff shared that the residents have faced the challenges associated with living an informal settlement for years and the absence of legal recognition and basic infrastructure had been a source of concern for its residents.
However, with the successful transformation of Cuvu Sigatoka into a formal settlement the residents are now looking forward to a future filled with stability.
