Young lad takes Fijian pride to India

-

Etonia Saukuru, a 20-year-old lad from Sabeto village in Nadi, was one of many young Fijians who showcased Fiji’s rich culture at the 2024 Youth Exchange Programme (YEP) in India.

This annual event, which was organised by the Indian Defense Ministry to celebrate India’s independence anniversary, brought together young participants from various countries, fostering cultural understanding and collaboration.

The group visited places of historical and cultural interest and interacted with top dignitaries of India.

Mr Saukuru, who was in India from January 15-30, 2024 viewed this opportunity as a chance to dive into a world of knowledge, learn about the histories of different countries and unite with people from diverse cultures.

His goal was to enhance the understanding and strengthen the bond between Fiji and India.

“My expectations for this Youth Exchange Program were to meet other participants from various countries and learn their stories, their cultures and historic backgrounds,” Mr Saukuru said.

During the pre-departure briefing and farewell held at the Indian High Commission in Suva, the Minister for Youth and Sports, Jese Saukuru, encouraged the participants to embrace the diversity, culture, and traditions they will encounter in India.

“This Youth Exchange Programme is not merely an opportunity to travel, but rather a chance to immerse yourselves in a rich tapestry of knowledge, intercultural dialogue, and personal development. Embrace the challenges that lie ahead, as they will shape you into fearless global citizens who have the capacity to ignite change and make a lasting impact,” Minister Saukuru had told the youth delegates.

“As you embark on this journey, remember that you are not only representing yourselves but also our great nation Fiji,” he said.

In 2022, Etonia Saukuru completed a training on Job Search Skills organised by the Ministry.

It was through this programme he was able to hone his CV writing skills and gained valuable insights from guest speakers with backgrounds in Human Resources.

As a result, he successfully secured a job as a Food and Beverage Attendant at Sofitel Fiji Resort and Spa in Denerau, Nadi.

With his experience from the Job Search Skills programme and now the Youth Exchange Programme, he hopes to gain a wealth of knowledge and a renewed determination to shape a brighter future for himself and his beloved country.

As an ambassador of goodwill and friendship, Mr Saukuru understood the importance of forming lasting bonds and making a lasting impact.

His journey to India not only represented his personal growth but also symbolised the aspirations of Fijians.

Minister Saukuru acknowledged the leadership of the Indian High Commissioner P. S. Karthigeyan for the opportunity given to Fiji’s youth.
