Challenging weather tests golfers at pro-am
THE Dinesh Chand-sponsored Pro-Am golf tournament teed off seamlessly despite the challenging weather at the Lautoka Golf Club yesterday.
Captain James Krishna, at the helm of the Lautoka Golf Club, expressed his delight at the successful turnout, with a commendable participation of 75 golfers.
“We have golfers from the Fiji Golf Club, Natadola, Denarau and Ba coming to Lautoka and playing in this one-day tourney.
“Despite the weather we had a good start, all golfers came in on time and we are very grateful for all these golfers,” Krishna said.
Notably, the tournament had a special emphasis on nurturing budding talent, exemplified by the seven junior players who enjoyed free entry.
Krishna elaborated, “As you know the Dinesh Chand tournament is focused on development, with the hope of developing more young junior players for the future of golf.”
Chand, a distinguished Fijian professional golfer renowned for his feats on the Japan Golf Tour, added prestige to the event.
$10,000 was prize money for professionals. According to Fiji PGA, Chand is a Fijian professional golfer who plays mainly on the Japan Golf Tour.
At the end of 2009, he lost his full playing rights for the Japan Golf Tour and so decided to play on the developmental Japan Challenge Tour in 2010. He won two events in a row which resulted in him regaining his full playing rights for the second half of the Japan Golf Tour season. He finished second at the 2010 Sun Chlorella Classic.
Chand has three wins on the Japan Golf Tour, and two on the Japan Challenge Tour.
