NGO outlines plans for province

- LECT

Site surveys and information gathering an essential aspect of LECT’s (Lau Education Charitable Trust) work.

LECT’s distribution of school supplies as well as assistance during the last two years is merely the “visible” component of all NGOs’ charitable and community service initiatives.

Behind the scenes, a team gathers “on-the-ground needs” by staying in villages and visiting schools to speak with community leaders and school management, as well as taking photographs and drone footage. This work is challenging due to the lack of electricity, water, and sanitation services in our communities.

LECT then uses that information, together with accessible Ministry of Education data on specific school functions, teacher numbers, student demographics, and even gender proportions, to design our current work.

In the past three years, LECT director Dr Gina Balawanilotu (China) has mostly directed this vital but usually unseen component of our operations.

For the recently completed trip, she was accompanied by fellow director Baleisasa NY (Akl, NZ), to both of whom we would like to express our gratitude for their passion and total commitment to undertaking such a time-consuming and self-funded exercise for LECT to continue its current programs while also exploring new opportunities for the future.

Our Mission

Our mission is to assist all the children in the remote Lau Province to gain access to high-quality 21st-century education in the shortest time possible so they can realise their full potential.

Our islands

Far to the east of the main island of Fiji, lies the Lau archipelago comprising about sixty islands and islets, about 23 are inhabited. They make up the Province of Lau in the Fiji Islands. Completely isolated geographically, the challenges of keeping abreast with the rest of the country — let alone the rest of this twenty-first-century world — have taken their toll in the fifty-plus years since Fiji’s Independence.

“Out of sight...Out of mind”, children’s education standards and quality of life generally have badly suffered. Our mission is to help the children of these remote islands improve their access to high-quality education. The ultimate aim is to move them into the 21st century international level playing field required, in the shortest time possible.

Our Vision

We see a future where all children in Lau attain an excellent education.
