Players mentally trained for critics

WE have to be brave to be able to represent the country says first time Fiji Rugby Women’s Sevens manager and former Fiji Pearls representative Luse Kotobalavu.

The Tokalau, Kabara native with maternal links to Rotuma is no stranger to the demands of being a national rep and a national team manager having managed the Fiji U21 Netball team.

“We have a squad of brave girls as it is not an easy place to be representing the country.

“There are a lot of demands and also a lot of critics including social stigma on women participating in a mostly male dominated sport,” she said.

“So they girls have been mentally and physically trained to meet these demands and critics with all credit to the wider coaching staff.”

The mother of three recently took up the position of manager only two months ago and is enjoying the challenges that come with the role.

“Time management is one of the biggest challenges, but I’m fortunate to have a great team beside me which makes work easier,” she said.

Luse said comparing the girls preparation to her time as member of the Fiji Pearls was almost similar.

“For anyone representing the country the demands on their mental and physical strengths are pushed to the limit.

“But we prepare as best we can and trust the process,” Luse said.

She said players have been turning up to training this past week with a strong mindset and determination to learn and improve their skills, fitness and game structures.

Luse hopes to continue her role as manager to the Olympic Games in Paris, France later this year.

Luse has participated in a netball world cup and several international tournaments for Fiji mostly as a wing defender.
