Company resolves 17-year grievance
A SEVENTEEN-YEAR grievance between mataqali Tavuitolu of Nalotawa and Fiji Pine Ltd has finally been resolved following years of dialogue and negotiations.
In a statement, Fiji Pine said the claim was made by members of the mataqali back in 2007 to pine stumpage money they were supposed to have received from areas overplanted by Fiji Pine Ltd on their land.
Fiji Pine Group executive chairman Ratu Rakuita Vakalalabure met members of the mataqali at Nanuku Village to discuss the issue and establish a constructive approach to addressing the grievance.
He said the agreement also signified a milestone in fostering positive relationships and collaboration between the forestry industry and local communities.
“We are delighted to have reached a resolution with mataqali Tavuitolu of Nanuku Village,” Ratu Rakuita said.
“This agreement reflects our commitment to fair and equitable practices, sustainable forestry management and mutual respect for the communities in which we operate.”
Ratu Rakuita said by working closely with mataqali Tavuitolu and other stakeholders, Fiji Pine reaffirmed its commitment to responsible stewardship of Fiji’s natural resources.
He said that apart from land rent royalties and premiums, Fiji Pine Ltd would give mataqali owners stumpage money from every pine tree planted on their leased land.
Speaking on behalf of the mataqali, Atunaisa Naura thanked Fiji Pine for coming to an amicable solution with the mataqali and their grievances.
Funds received will benefit and assist the mataqali in the areas of education, housing and other necessities.
