A ‘spectacular’ show

- By JAKE WISE

FIJI got to witness the debut of the Broadway production Mama Mia! last weekend in amazing sound and colour, and what a joy it was for the sellout crowd.

The Festivals Company presented the hit musical, featuring the music of ABBA, in Suva as part of Arts Season 2024, and premiered at the Suva Civic Centre on February 9.

The turnout for the premier was nothing short of spectacular, with almost every single seat in the auditorium of Suva’s Civic Centre filled with enthusiastic individuals.

“The show was too good, I enjoyed every bit of it and I will come back for more,” said Naomi Underhill.

Without a doubt the excitement resonated with everyone who attended.

“We were so ready to sing along to the iconic musical as it hit the stage in the heart of the Pacific,” said Keren Koroi.

Manoa Kamikamica, the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Trade, congratulated the production team and the actors.

“It was an excellent performance,” Mr Kamikamica said.

“It was very entertaining with a Fijian twist and it showed that we can also do it in Fiji.”

He commended director Michael Payer for introducing this new form of entertainment to Fiji.

“I wish they’d have a few more productions,” Mr Kamikamica added.

Assistant Foreign Minister Lenora Qereqeretabua was one of the many who attended the debut show.

“The show is just amazing, everybody enjoyed it,” says Ms Qereqeretabua.

“I know tonight there were some opening night jitters, but I know it’s just going to be slicker and slicker as the days go on.”

Introducing new forms of entertainment to a country like Fiji holds significant potential for cultural enrichment, tourism development, and community engagement.

Broadway productions can foster social cohesion and support charitable causes, enriching the overall quality of life for Fijians.

Mr Kamikamica emphasised how embracing new forms of entertainment like Broadway in Fiji represented not only a cultural enhancement but also an opportunity for economic growth and social development.

Michael Payer, the director and visionary behind the scenes, said, “Tonight proved successful and everyone was amazing”.

“If one thing is sure, it’s that we will definitely do more productions in the future.”

Mama Mia! will show again this Friday from 7.30pm to 10.30pm and conclude on Saturday February 17 with two shows - one from 2pm to 5pm and the finale from 7.30pm to 10.30pm.
