Marine booms contain oil spill from spreading
A PORTION of the Lautoka Fisheries Wharf was covered with thick black oily patches believed to have been caused by a spill from a nearby industrial plant.
Maritime Safety Authority of Fiji chief executive officer, Joeli Cawaki confirmed the spillage was contained when their officers placed marine booms in the harbour to prevent it from spreading.
“Our officers and other relevant authorities worked hard to prevent the spill from spreading which was from a nearby boiler,” Mr Cawaki said.
“We were able to contain the spill using a schemer which pumped the oil out of the water and straight into a truck.
“They worked round-the-clock to mitigate this issue considering the impact it would have had on the sea nearby.”
Mr Cawaki cautioned nearby residents to refrain from fishing and consuming seafood within the vicinity for at least two weeks.
Fiji Sugar Corporation chief executive officer, Bhan Singh said they were working with relevant authorities to conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and ascertain its root cause.
He said they also acknowledged concerns voiced by fishermen, residents, and other stakeholders regarding the spill and its potential ramifications on the marine environment.
“We want to assure all parties involved that FSC takes this matter seriously,” Mr Singh said.
“FSC has initiated communication with relevant stakeholders, including local authorities, environmental agencies, and community representatives.
“We provide regular updates on the evolving situation and coordinate response efforts to ensure a comprehensive and effective approach.
Mr Singh said they were fully committed to mitigating any environmental impact and supporting affected communities.
