Fijiana 7s to reload

- By MELI LADDPETER

FIJI Airways Fijiana 7s head coach Saiasi Fuli says the Perth 7s tournament held earlier this month in Australia has allowed the side to figure out what they need to work on as they prepare for the rest of the HSBC SVNS Series.

During their last training session in Suva last week before leaving for the Vancouver 7s, Fuli said the Perth 7s allowed his side to pinpoint areas of weaknesses that needed attention.

“The Perth 7s was a good reflection for us because it allowed us to gauge where we stand and to see what all we need to do as we prepare for the rest of the season,” he said.

“We were able to restrategise and have a good look at ourselves and pick on the areas we need to work on. Even though the tournament did not go as we wanted to, there were a lot of takeaways.”

With the Vancouver 7s tournament this weekend, Fuli said his side had been working on receiving kick offs and their ruck, which were two areas of weakness noted during the Perth 7s.

“The girls had a lot of reflecting to do after the Perth 7s and it has helped with their growth as players.

“We have been working exclusively on our rucks and receiving kick offs, as these were two of our areas of weakness from Perth.

“Coming to the Vancouver 7s our target is to reach the semi-finals and improve our ranking from the last tournament.

“The goal is to improve from every tournament we compete in, gather as many points as we can as we try to qualify for the grand final in Madrid.”

Meanwhile, the Fijiana are in pool B alongside Australia, Japan, and the USA.

They face the US at 7.30am on Friday in their first match, followed by Australia at 12.46pm. They face Japan at 6.15am on Saturday.

The Fiji men’s side will take on Spain at 11.20am on Friday and Canada at 4.44pm before taking on Argentina at 10.33am on Saturday.
