Drua, Storm foster bonds

- By ANASILINI NATOGA

THE Melbourne Storm is intensifying its preparations for the upcoming second-round trial match against the Newcastle Knights by making full use of the Fijan Drua facilities in Nadi this week.

In a reciprocal agreement, AAMI Park recently played host to the Fijian Drua, leveraging Storm facilities for their trial match against the Melbourne Rebels last week in anticipation of the 2024 Shop N Save Super Rugby season.

This strategic move was a tactical step towards the looming Super Rugby season, showcasing the level of collaboration and mutual support between these two rugby powerhouses.

The two clubs have shared a strong relationship in recent years, with Fijian Drua coach Mick Byrne spending time with the Storm last year in the lead up to a blockbuster clash against the Penrith Panthers at Marvel Stadium.

An official statement released by the Storm stated, “With Drua operating out of AAMI Park, they will repay the favour with Storm set to be visitors at their home base in Fiji.

“Storm will utilise Drua’s gym, team meeting rooms and training field ahead of their second trial of pre-season and a historic clash against the Newcastle Knights.”

This deep connection between the two clubs has been fostered through the leadership of Swire Shipping Fijian Drua’s CEO Mark Evans, who previously served as the CEO for the Melbourne Storm from 2013 to 2015, further solidifying the bond between these two formidable entities.

This enduring bond solidifies the collaborative spirit between the clubs, making them an even more formidable force in the rugby landscape.
