- By ANASILINI NATOGA

AUSTRALIAN-BORN brothers with Fijian roots, Daniel, and Jacob Saifiti, are set for a special moment as they gear up to showcase their talents for the Newcastle Knights against Melbourne Storm in Lautoka this Saturday, marking the first-ever NRL trial match in Fiji.

Born and raised in Australia but deeply connected to their Fijian heritage, the brothers are thrilled about playing in front of a home crowd that loves rugby league.

Speaking to this newspaper Daniel said, “I’m very excited to do this for the first time.

“I remember making my international debut for Fiji back in 2015, on the Gold Coast vs PNG who were coached by Mal Meninga, it was a proud day for my family,” Daniel said.

Jacob echoed the same sentiments and said, “I also debuted for Fiji in the same game and I was also selected to play a game in Fiji during the 2017 World Cup, but I ruled out with Injury unfortunately.

“We are both excited to play in this game this weekend, in front a huge crowd that will be going crazy,” Jacob said.

For the brothers, the experience holds profound significance as they reflect on their family’s Fijian ties.

“It will be a very proud day on Saturday, especially for our mum’s side of the family, Nan and Pop have always ensured we are well connected to our Fijian heritage,” the brothers excitedly said.

The brothers acknowledge the cultural impact of the game, recognizing the love Fijians have for rugby league and anticipating the profound effect this historic match will have on their connection to the local community.

“Hopefully we can inspire young people to chase their dreams, either in Fiji or here in Australia, helping kids chase their goals is one of the great benefits of our jobs,” they added.

Proudly representing both Fiji and the Newcastle Knights throughout their careers, the brothers emphasize the determination and toughness ingrained in Fijian sporting culture. As they prepare to take the field, they carry with them the cultural values that have shaped their identity, contributing to their resilience on and off the pitch.

“People often mention Fijian sporting people are known for their determination and toughness, we are very proud of our heritage and having played for the Newcastle Knights our entire professional career, we are really honoured to represent both of them,” the brothers add on.

As the game approaches, the excitement is palpable.

“Excited and looking forward to play in front of the local people.”

In this historic NRL clash, Daniel and Jacob aim to make more than just a mark on the scoreboard. They seek to leave an enduring legacy, inspiring a new generation of Fijian rugby league enthusiasts to dream big and pursue their passion with unwavering dedication.

As the island nation stands poised to witness this momentous event, the brothers stand ready to etch their names into Fijian rugby league history.

The match kicks off this Saturday at 2:45pm at Churchill Park.
