Competition to create pathways
A NEW Oceania Rugby under-20s Challenge tournament will be held on February 27 in a move aimed at reinvigorating pathway programs across the Pacific.
This is part of a strategic partnership between Oceania Rugby and Moana Pasifika which will see the new age-grade competition as a viable pathway opportunity for players across the Pacific to progress to the elite professional environment of two Super Rugby Pacific franchises in the Fijian Drua and Moana Pasifika.
The competition will include Fiji, Samoa, Tonga, and a Moana Pasifika invitational U20s team.
There is also a vision to feature all other Pacific unions including Papua New Guinea, the Cook Islands, the Solomon Islands, and French Polynesia territories.
Moana Pasifika pathways manager Leasiosiofaasisina Kevin Senio described the move as a massive boost for the future of rugby, highlighting the creation of a genuine pathway for upcoming Pasifika talents.
Fiji Rugby elite pathways and performance manager Bill Gadolo welcomed the new competition.
“The Fijian pathway focuses on developing our age-grade talent for the modern game, including travel exposure, adaptability, and short turnaround tournaments.
“We welcome Oceania Rugby and Moana Pasifika for taking the initiative to engage Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, and Moana Pasifika.”
The competition not only highlights the immense talent and passion for rugby in the Oceania region but also provides a platform for young players to shine on an international stage.
“This unique blend of athleticism, creativity, and cultural pride promises to showcase our region’s top rugby talent in a traditional hub for Pasifika communities, the city of Auckland,” Oceania Rugby general manager Frank Puletua stated.
Pelenato Sakalia, who is the chief executive of Moana Pasifika, echoed similar sentiments.
“It’s an exciting opportunity for our youth. It is a privilege for us to serve our Pacific nations. This is an opportunity to accelerate our pathways programs. It’s also an opportunity to unify Moana Pasifika with community rugby and the home nations U20 programs. We’re focused on running a successful competition.”
Samoa and Tonga rugby unions are on board and have shown strong support for the tournament.
Moana Pasifika will host the tournament at North Harbour in Auckland on February 27.
The second round is scheduled for March 2, culminating in the final round on Wednesday, March 6.
The new competition will also serve as a qualifier for Samoa and Tonga for the 2024 World Rugby U20s Trophy to be played in Scotland from July 2-17.
The winner between the two Pacific foes in round two will advance as Oceania’s representative to this key event.
