RENOWNED football figure Terry Venables, celebrated for his innovative and charismatic managerial career, passed away at the age of 80 last December.

The former England, Tottenham, and Barcelona boss left an indelible mark on English football, with notable achievements such as guiding England to the Euro 96 semi-finals and leading Barcelona to the 1986 European Cup final.

His managerial prowess also secured the 1991 FA Cup for Tottenham. In a statement, Venables’ family expressed their devastation, noting that he passed away peacefully after a long illness. They requested privacy to mourn the loss of the “wonderful husband and father” they were fortunate to have in their lives.

Known for his vibrant personality and commitment to attacking football, Venables endeared himself to players and fans alike.

Gary Lineker, who played under Venables at both Barcelona and Tottenham, paid a heartfelt tribute on social media, describing him as the “best, most innovative coach” he had the privilege of playing for.

Lineker emphasised that Venables was not just a great manager but also a vibrant, charming, witty friend who would be greatly missed.

Tottenham honoured Venables by holding a minute’s applause before their Premier League fixture against Aston Villa, with both teams wearing black armbands.

Gareth Southgate, England’s manager, praised Venables for his tactical acumen and empathetic approach.

Southgate highlighted Venables’ open-mindedness, forward-thinking, and ability to create an environment that allowed players to flourish.

Nicknamed ‘El Tel,’ Venables achieved success with Barcelona, winning the La Liga title in 1985 and leading the team to the European Cup final in 1986.

He later managed Tottenham, winning the FA Cup in 1991, but faced an acrimonious departure after a falling-out with the club’s owner, Alan Sugar.

Venables, who won two England caps as a player, also had managerial spells with QPR, Crystal Palace, and the Australian national team.

Tottenham’s current manager, Ange Postecoglou, praised Venables as someone who embodied everything the football club aspired to be.
