- By MATAIASI STARK

IN the world of women’s rugby where strength, skill, and determination converge lies a story that transcends the boundaries of the field. It is a narrative of sacrifice, resilience, and the unbreakable bonds of family, embodied by one young athlete whose journey is filled with tears of longing and triumph.

Meet Evivi Senikarivi, a 22-year-old rising star hailing from the vibrant village of Qalira on Kadavu. In the arena of rugby, she stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration, her prowess on the field matched only by the depth of her emotional journey.

For Evivi, rugby is more than just a sport, it’s a lifeline, a source of solace amidst the challenges of life. Yet, behind the facade of strength lies a heart burdened by the weight of separation. It has been eight long years since she last embraced her parents, a separation that has left an indelible mark on her soul.

“I haven’t seen my parents since 2016,” she confides, her voice trembling with emotion.

“Leaving them behind was the hardest decision I’ve ever made. Every game, every victory, I wish they could be here to share it with me.”

In that vulnerable moment, Evivi’s story unfolds — a narrative of resilience and unwavering determination, fuelled by the love and support of her family. Inspired by the achievements of her older male cousins in professional rugby overseas, she embarked on her rugby journey with unwavering resolve.

Since leaving Kadavu in pursuit of her rugby dreams, Evivi’s path has been marked by sacrifice and hardship. Financial constraints and the challenges of distance have tested her resolve, yet her commitment to her passion remains unwavering.

Representing Fiji in both 7s and 15s rugby, Evivi’s star continues to rise, a testament to her talent and dedication. Yet, amidst the accolades and triumphs, her heart yearns for the familiar embrace of her loved ones.

As she dreams of the day she can reunite with her parents, Evivi’s journey serves as a poignant reminder of the sacrifices made in pursuit of one’s dreams. Through tears of longing and moments of triumph, she embodies the spirit of women’s rugby, a testament to the power of perseverance, resilience, and the unbreakable bonds of family.

And amidst her journey, Evivi finds solace in simple pleasures like avocado toasts, her favourite meal. She also draws strength from her cherished teammates, Karalaini Naisewa and Vani Arei, whose camaraderie and support have been pillars of her rugby journey.
