Suva holds off Ba

- By MELI LADDPETER

SUVA has started their 2024 Skipper Cup campaign on a high after defeating a determined Ba side 29-0 in their first match of the tournament yesterday.

The visiting Ba side felt the wrath of the defending champions in what was a muddy battle at the Bidesi Grounds due to heavy rainfall in the capital city.

However, the match was deemed friendly after the Ba side donned the wrong logo on their jersey for the match.

Suva head coach Solomone Nute said securing a win against the Westerners is important for the side as they look to recreate their impressive undefeated streak from last season.

“We want to continue with our undefeated streak from last year so winning this first game has set the standard for us,” he said.

Defending their status as champs is their target for the season, and Nute is adamant the side has what it takes to win the tournament for a second consecutive year.

“Our goal is to defend our title and we believe we have what it takes to achieve this.”

The side fielded five debutants, with a handful of under-20 players being featured on the field.

“We have a few under-20 boys too with us today and they really stepped on the field against Ba.”

Meanwhile, Nute thanked Ba for giving his side a tough battle and wished them the best for the rest of the season.

“Playing against Ba today wasn’t easy as the boys had to fight their way to earn the win and we take our hats off to them.”

He noted a few areas his side still had to work on to continue their dream run from last year as they look to their next match against Lautoka this weekend.

“It’s back to our drawing book for us, just a few areas we need to work on like our consistency on the field.

“We now look to Lautoka, who has returned to the tournament, and we are expecting nothing short of a battle.”
