- By NANISE NEIMILA

IN the beautiful heart of Ucunivanua, within Fiji’s scenic Tailevu region, resides a woman whose entrepreneurial spirit knows no bounds.

The journey of Akanisi Adimaiwai, a retired hotel worker and former employee of Fiji Coconut Industry, represents resilience, innovation, and the power of self-belief.

“In my opinion, skincare is more than just a beauty treatment; it’s a reflection of our connection to nature,” Ms Adimaiwai said.

With nothing but her savings and a steadfast determination to succeed, she embarked on a journey to craft something truly unique using the abundant resources of her homeland.

Drawing inspiration from Fiji’s tropical abundance and hot climate, Ms Adimaiwai’s product line boasts a tantalising array of offerings, each infused with locally sourced ingredients such as dilo, charcoal, coconut virgin oil, turmeric and bamboo.

“Our land provides us with everything we need to thrive, and it’s our responsibility to honour that gift,” she expressed as her hands deftly crafted her signature body scrubs and balms.

However, Ms Adimaiwai’s journey does not end there, recognising the untapped potential of her creations, she sets her sights on expansion, seeking support from the Government to elevate her business to new heights.

“With their assistance, I aim to introduce barcoding and labelling to my products, paving the way for broader accessibility and recognition for business KokonutBiz Fiji.”

Indeed, Ms Adimaiwai’s entrepreneurial spirit extends far beyond the confines of her workshop.

With an unwavering commitment to uplifting her fellow women, she imparts invaluable advice to those who dare to dream.

“To my sisters at home, I say this: never underestimate the power of your ideas,” she asserts, her words ringing with conviction.

“The internet is a treasure trove of opportunities, and with the guidance of Government-led workshops, the possibilities are endless.”

As Ms Adimaiwai forges ahead on her journey, her vision serves as a beacon of hope for aspiring entrepreneurs everywhere.

It was through her dedication, ingenuity and unwavering belief in the potential of her homeland, she was able to transform coconut shells and bamboo into skincare marvels and also pave the way for a brighter, more inclusive future for women in Fiji and beyond.

“The only limits we face are the ones we impose upon ourselves, let us break free and soar to new heights together.”

Recently micro, small and medium enterprises (MSME) were assisted by the government under the Trade Enhancement Programme (TEP), including Ms Adimaiwai.

This initiative, which has been digitised, supports businesses in the micro category that need capital injection to grow their businesses.

Since inception in 2022, the TEP portal has received 4,170 applications online out of which 71 per cent were women applicants.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Cooperatives, Small, Medium, and Business Enterprises, Manoa Kamikamica, highlighted the Government’s commitment to MSMEs, citing an investment of over $100 million.

DPM Kamikamica acknowledged existing achievements while expressing the ongoing commitment to enhance the MSME landscape.

Government initiatives include integrating MSME networks and ecosystems, streamlining business processes, improving regulations, enhancing access to information, reducing financing gaps and fortifying business development services.

Looking ahead, the Government aims to formulate a comprehensive national MSME Strategic Plan, focusing on strengthening various aspects of the sector.

In a show of continued support, the Government allocates nearly $280,000 in grants to a group of entrepreneurs, reinforcing its commitment to nurturing innovative concepts and transforming them into sustainable businesses.
