Rugby feast for people on Kadavu

- By MELI LADDPETER

RUGBY fans and enthusiasts on the island of Kadavu will have something to look forward to this weekend as their senior men’s, under-20, and women’s teams will be hosting Serua for their second match of the Vodafone Vanua Championship.

Fiji Rugby Union operations manager Jiko

Matawalu is calling on the people of Kadavu to come out in numbers on Saturday to support their team in their second round of the competition.

“This will be a historical moment for Kadavu to be hosting their first Vanua Championship match, so we are encouraging the people of Kadavu to come out in numbers and support your team,” Matawalu said.

Having home games played at different unionbased camps is part of compliance for any union that is a participating team in the competition.

“This is not a decision made by FRU but are the conditions of the unions if they want to compete, they will have to host some of their games.

“We have Taveuni, who is also hosting their home games in Taveuni, and Ovalau who is hosting their home matches in Ovalau as well as other teams.

“However, we still have Yasawa and Malolo who we hope will be able to host their games in Malolo and Yasawa respectively as we also want to take the games to the grassroots supporters out in the Islands,” he said.

Kadavu men’s first match against Navosa on Saturday was postponed because of unfavourable weather conditions at Vatureba Park in Sigatoka.

Meanwhile, during the side’s last training session at Lawaqa Park yesterday, they were visited by Swire Shipping Fijian Drua and Flying Fijians strength and conditioning coach Nacanieli Cawanibuka.

The side returned to Kadavu yesterday where they prepare for their muchanticipated match against Serua on Saturday.
