Sorby strives for a career in rugby

- By JOHN CHETTY

WHAT started as a leisure activity for 18-year-old Cannan Melrose Sorby has turned into a dream for the prop as she strives to pursue a career in rugby.

From playing casually with friends to competing in the biggest women’s rugby competition in the country is a testament to her talent and dedication.

The Taveuni lass is part of the Nasinu under-20 and senior team in the ANZ Marama Cup competition that started last weekend.

Hailing from Somosomo Village in Taveuni, Sorby’s love for rugby blossomed during her time at Vashist Muni

Primary School where she found joy in running with the ball and playing with friends.

Her passion for rugby goes way back to her childhood days when she had always dreamt of becoming a professional rugby player.

At just 15 years old, Sorby joined the Lami Steelers’ senior women’s team where she gained valuable experience despite being the youngest member of the side.

Playing alongside seasoned players provided her with essential knowledge and skills, shaping her into the player she is today.

“It was a great experience for me, as I was the youngest and playing with other experienced players, it gave me confidence to work even harder,” said Sorby.

After three years with the Lami Steelers, Sorby’s hard work and dedication were recognised when she was chosen by Nasinu Women’s coach Tomasi Katonivualiku to join the team for the ANZ Marama Competition this year.

“Playing for both the Nasinu U20 and senior teams have been an incredible opportunity for me.

“Last week we had a tough match against Nadroga and got the win 20-10, it was an exhilarating experience.

“Looking forward to an exciting game on Saturday against Nadi, hope to show my skills and get another win in this second round of competition.”
