Macuata beats Nadi at home

- By NACANIELI TUILEVUKA

MACUATA created the biggest upset of round two of the Skipper Cup competition yesterday after they edged powerhouse Nadi 17-13 at Subrail Park in Labasa.

The match, which kept fans on the edge of their seats, was a testament to Macuata’s strategic planning.

Despite both teams tying three-all in the first half, Macuata’s assistant coach George Racei said the message in the first half was to place pressure on the Nadi side and to put their best performance.

“We wanted a win,” he said. After the loss against Nadroga last week, he said they had diligently worked on addressing their weaknesses and honing their skills.

“This ultimately paid off in the crucial moments of the game,” he said

The second half saw Nadi taking an early lead.

Nadi hit back with two tries, with flyhalf Akuila Momo converted both and nailing a penalty to put them ahead 13-3.

However, Macuata refused to back down, placing pressure on the Nadi side. Pita Moce capitalised on a scrum opportunity to score a try, narrowing the gap to 10-13.

With time running out, Macuata intensified their offensive onslaught.

Macuata’s halfback Jone Vatuwalulu showcased his prowess by bulldozing through the Nadi defence to score the final try, sealing their win.

Racei attributed the team’s success to their faith and determination, expressing gratitude to the Lord for the victory.

“Nadi is a giant in the competition. Our aim was to create upset,” he said.

Macuata will play against Lautoka at Churchill Park in Lautoka.

Meanwhile, the women’s rugby team from Macuata thrashed Cakaudrove 41-27.
