Group to assist Fiji
THE Agence Française de Développement (AFD) Group’s new representative in Suva, Elodie Vitalis, was formally welcomed on Tuesday at the French Ambassador’s residence.
The AFD Suva team is looking forward to working with the Government to focus on important issues such as climate change, biodiversity, and urban development.
Ms Vitalis highlighted that the French government was aware of the effects of global warming in the Pacific, and being stationed in Fiji could strengthen the ties between the two countries.
“France, through the AFD, is aware of these challenges and is resolutely committed to standing alongside the Pacific island countries to address these issues. My appointment underscores this desire to strengthen our ties with this region, to share expertise, and to work together in a spirit of solidarity and co-operation for a sustainable future,” she said.
She also expressed that the Pacific was unique in its ways and that there was a need to protect its resources for the betterment of future generations.
“The Pacific is an area of unparalleled beauty, rich in unique biodiversity and fascinating cultures. However, it also faces significant challenges, notably climate change, which threatens the fragile ecosystems and livelihoods of its inhabitants.”
Assistant Minister for Foreign Affairs, Lenora Qereqeretabua, who was the chief guest at the event, thanked the French government for this initiative and looked forward to working with them on more future projects.
“We’re very appreciative of the support from the French government and its people, on the front of climate change and biodiversity, we have a lot of learning to do, and we thank you for this,” she said.
