- By NACANIELI TUILEVUKA

KAROLINA Marama is a familiar face in Labasa. As shoppers enter Charan Jeath Singh Mall, she is the first one to greet them with bula sia.

A few know this of her but the single mother of four daughters, has faced countless challenges since separating from her husband six years ago.

Her story is one of determination, perseverance, and the unbreakable bond of a mother's love.

Marama said her husband left her and the children in Taveuni in 2017 without any explanation.

"My husband was working at Salialevu Estate

on the island," she said.

"He was an alcoholic and I didn't know where his pay cheque was going."

She left the garden island stepping into the unknown unsure of where her next steps would lead.

"I came back to the village in Dogotuki, Macuata," she said.

"It was a difficult time for all of us, but my parents welcomed us with open arms, and for that, I am grateful."

"We left the island behind in search of stability and support."

To make ends meet, she took on various odd jobs in Labasa.

"I worked as a house girl for a year," she shared.

"It was hard work, but I knew I had to do it for my daughters." Despite the challenges she faced, Karolina never lost hope.

"I knew I had to find a way to provide for my family and I couldn't let my daughters down," she said.

Her perseverance paid off when she discovered a new opportunity to support her family.

"I started selling perfumes for a teacher named Rupeni Rokovata," she said.

"For this, I am grateful to him.

"It's not much, but it helps put food on the table and keeps a roof over our heads."

Today, Karolina lives in a hut in Bulileka, surrounded by the love and laughter of her daughters.

"I may not have much, but I have everything I need," she said, with a smile radiant with contentment. Her journey is a testament to the power of love, resilience, and the indomitable spirit of a mother's heart.

"I will do whatever it takes to give them the future they deserve," she said.

Marama stands as a beacon of hope and inspiration for all those who know her.

"Now, my eldest daughter is in form six," she said.

"My message to my daughters is always put God first and you will excel in education."

Her advice to other single parent families is to set their priorities right and not be swayed by the opinions of loved ones.
