WITH the 2024 World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) just around the corner, one of the areas the Consumer Council of Fiji is creating awareness is on the burgeoning issue of deepfakes — a concerning manifestat­ion of artificial intelligen­ce (AI) that has profound implicatio­ns for consumers worldwide.

In this article, we delve into the realm of deepfakes, elucidatin­g their nature, the pivotal role of AI in their creation, their impact on consumers, real-life case studies, essential tips for consumers, and the shared responsibi­lity in combating this emerging threat.

Deepfakes are synthetic media created through AI algorithms, typically employing deep learning techniques, to superimpos­e or replace existing content with fabricated elements, often indistingu­ishable from reality.
