Former coaches keen to help

FIJI Rugby Union interim chair Peter Mazey has confirmed that Rugby House has plans to select a “Director of 7s Rugby” for the national men’s and women’s teams.

Mazey made the announcement during a press conference at Rugby House in Suva where three prospects have already shown interest in taking up the position.

“This will not necessarily be a full-time position but an advisory position,” he said.

“However, I can tell you that we have received expressions of interest from three 7s experts, namely Ben Ryan, Waisale Serevi, and Gareth Baber.”

Mazey says the decision to have this position is aimed at having someone of high expertise in 7s to manage all programs for the national teams.

“We’re happy to be receiving expressions of interest from these three former coaches and rugby great because they will really help with the development of our teams before we head into the upcoming Olympics.”

Meanwhile, with former gold medallist Osea Kolinisau selected as the new head coach, Mazey believes the men’s 7s side still have ample time to build towards the Olympics and defend their gold medal.

“We know we have only four more months left (to the Paris Olympics), but I believe Kolinisau will be able to help our men’s side prepare to defend their gold by then.”

He said receiving the support of former national 7s reps in selecting Kolinisau as the new head coach reassured Rugby House of their decision.

“After the StoneWriters posted a video of them wanting Kolinisau as a coach, we were happy because we knew that we have their support in doing so.”
