Fathers present i-sevu

THE Methodist Church of Fiji and Rotuma marked the end of Father’s Week with a Father’s Sunday service in all churches around the country yesterday.

With the theme - Recognising God’s purpose in our lives is the beginning of becoming whole - more than 20 fathers of Ratu Ifereimi Kubukawa Memorial Church in Wakanisila, Kalabu, participated in a spirited service, bringing a sense of togetherness for those in the community.

As per the outline of the Methodist Church, the day for fathers witnessed the presentation of first fruits, or i-sevu.

Head of the Men’s Ministry, Wame Rarasiga, said presenting their first fruits in conjunction with Father’s Day signifies their role in toiling the land and honouring God in their harvest.

“It recognises that all good things originate from God and that everything belongs to him,” said Mr Raravula.

“With the land he has provided us and the ability to toil it, it is only right to glorify him and appreciate his provision by offering the first fruits.”

Members of the congregation also observed the last post to commemorate forefathers who had worked hand in hand to establish the Wakanisila settlement.

Considered a home to those who searched for better prospects in Suva, Mr Rarasiga said if it wasn’t for the forefathers who tread the community before them, they wouldn’t be where they were today.

“Today we also honour the men who came before us and who have left their footprints with positive impact today.

“They are the community’s fallen heroes as evidenced by the church and village hall that still stand today.”
