Water struggle ends
THE struggle of accessing clean and safe drinking water will no longer be an issue for the villagers of Tubairata and Mavua in Nadroga.
This following the commissioning of a new water investment project worth $592,000 funded by Government for 146 households.
Officiating at the event last Wednesday, Public Works, Meterological Services and Transport Minister Ro Filipe Tuisawau said the project demonstrated Government’s commitment to providing clean and safe water to all Fijians.
“The two villages have struggled to access clean water for a long time,” he said.
“The old water system couldn’t keep up with the growing population forcing villagers to get water from the Sigatoka River, putting their health at risk.”
He added the new project will not only address the issue of limited water supply, but will also provide safe water.
Ro Filipe commended all key stakeholders involved in making this project happen.
“I wish to convey my sincere thanks to all those who have worked tirelessly and making this project a success from employees of Water Authority of Fiji to the community members who supported the project.
Ro Filipe said with the project being handed over to the two villages, the village water committee played a critical role in the management and sustainability of the projects over time.
“I urge villagers to support the village water committee responsible for managing the rural water system, ensuring any water issues are addressed promptly. “
He reminded the villagers to use water wisely as every drop counts.
