Mereani’s dream job

- By TEMALESI VONO

TEACHING has always been a dream job for Savusavu lass Mereani Seiniloloma.

Although she wasn’t able to pursue her dream job earlier because of commitments, the 31-year-old overcame all obstacles and managed to secure a teaching career two and a half years ago.

Her inspiration stems from the love and guidance of her parents, which led her to believe that she could be a role model to her students the way her parents were to her.

Not only was she motivated under her parent’s tutelage, Ms Seiniloloma also gives credit to her primary schoolteacher, Ajesh Kumar, who taught her in classes 4 and 5 at Khemendra Central School in Savusavu.

“While in primary school, Mr Kumar showed us that he had a heart for teaching,” Ms Seiniloloma says.

“He was able to bring himself down to our level and communicate with us in iTaukei (language) as well, which I think was pretty cool.

“At that time, it was easy for us to understand him and we were able to learn a lot.”

The Year 1 teacher has been teaching for two years at Bau District School, Namara District School being her first teaching post.

“It was an exciting time for me. I couldn’t wait to start doing what I wanted to do,” she says.

Getting to know the students on a personal level is one of the best things about her job, and the mother-ofone is always determined to help her pupils grow spiritually, socially and academically.

“Oh, wow, the best thing about my job is definitely familiarising myself with my class,” she says with a smile.

“I am content with the fact that I am able to capture their attention, especially when they achieve the goals I set for them every day.

“One example is reading. The way they give me their attention and try to grasp what is being taught and achieve what is to be achieved, at the end of the day that right there is the top of the list.”

Ms Seiniloloma does not only witness the growth of her students, she gets inspired as well just by seeing the results.

“Yes, it inspires us teachers a lot. When you see your students drawing or reading, that’s when you become proud of yourself and of them.

“It makes me want to do better and be better.”

Reminiscing about her primary school days, Ms Seiniloloma admits she was talkative and outgoing.

“If you ask my primary school teachers, they will tell you the same thing,” she says with a laugh.

“They’ll tell you I was the talkative one in school.

“From Class 1 to Class 8, I can say my report would just be filled by my teachers’ comments that I was the most talkative student in class.

“But from Form 3 to Form 7, I mellowed a bit. That’s when I started acting shy and all.”

After a long day at work, seeing and holding her daughter is what she looks forward to when she gets home.

“I’m a first time mom. My daughter is six months old and I love every minute of it,” she says happily.

“My husband has been great with me so far and the support system I have at home is just amazing.”

The bubbly mother-ofone owes it to her parents for being her teachers at home, and she jokingly says that although she is not a good person to take advice from, she would still encourage people, especially females, to believe in themselves and that goals can be achieved when one puts one’s trust in God.

“Believe that you can do what you want to do,” she advises.

“Always take your problems and issues to God and trust that he will do what he needs to do.

“Pray about it and witness the good changes that will unfold before you.”
