Commonwealth eyes young people
THE energy of young people will transform the future of the Commonwealth in development, technology and preserving and restoring nature and biodiversity, says British High Commissioner Dr Brian Jones.
He said this while addressing guests at the Commonwealth Day celebration at his residence in Suva on Monday. The event was attended by members of the diplomatic corp, senior government officials and other dignitaries.
Dr Jones said the event was significant because it brought together the Commonwealth family to engage with the next generation.
“The idea is to bring together young people and learn a little bit more about the Commonwealth,” he said.
“But they also share views and perspectives on how you want to shape it because for the Commonwealth to succeed, you need to have an incredible future.
“That means the Commonwealth playing a greater role in the things that matter to people like prosperity, education, trade and investment in the future.”
Dr Jones said the Commonwealth was playing a great role in the fight for climate change to protect and save the Pacific Islands’ biodiversity and save the landmasses.
Additionally, he said that like other members of the Commonwealth, there was an eagerness to build a future that involved equality across the spectrum of gender and people with disabilities as well as people of diverse backgrounds.
“It is the energy of young people that will transform the future of the Commonwealth in development, technology and preserving and restoring nature and biodiversity.
“And I hope it will help shape and safeguard our commonwealth future.”
