PACIFIC Council of Churches (PCC) Partners with World Wildlife Fund (WWF) and Ministry of Environment for Wildlife Conservation Week The PCC has taken the lead to advocate for environmental stewardship with the launch of a week-long prayer week dedicated to wildlife and reflection.

The event, which commenced on March 3 and culminates with an Interfaith Service on March 10, aims to draw attention to the pressing need for wildlife conservation in Fiji.

Both the church and WWF believe that a call from the Prime Minister on commitments towards protecting wildlife in Fiji would be impactful and help in pushing out messages at the local level to stimulate a national conversation on the declining state of wildlife and the urgent need for action.

Methodist Church of Fiji general secretary, Reverend Simione Tugi, said, “this partnership with the Ministry of Environment aligns well with the annual Season of Creation events, emphasising the responsibility bestowed upon us by God to preserve our environment and wildlife”.

On the relationship between religion and wildlife conservation, Reverend Tugi elaborated, “the Bible teaches us that humans are stewards of the earth, entrusted by God to care for and preserve all living creatures. This responsibility extends to ensuring the well-being of our environment, as it is a reflection of our reverence for God’s creations”.

He further highlighted, “we have invited representatives from all religions to participate in prayers and share their perspectives on wildlife conservation, as this is a national issue, and we welcome collaboration from all faiths”.

Reverend Tugi, underscored that shared responsibility of humanity in environmental preservation and stated, “as humans, we bear a heavy responsibility for preserving the environment. It is imperative that we reflect on our actions and strive to be better stewards of God’s creation, by caring for our environment, we ensure a sustainable future for all,” he added.
