Friendly rivalry builds camaraderie
Combining ‘inter-house events’ share the cost of using the HFC Bank Stadium
TO share the financial burden of hiring the HFC Bank Stadium, four schools came together to have their inter-house competition. Instead of a normal inter-house competition, athletes from the Davuilevu Methodist School, Noco Secondary School, Nakasi High School and Nabua Secondary School came together to compete with each other.
Nakasi High School principal, Praveen Chand said the ‘inter-school interhouse’ competition was organised for many reasons.
"It assists the small schools to share the financial burden of hiring the stadium," he said.
The cost of hiring the HFC Bank Stadium is high and for small schools sharing the cost minimises the financial burden.
"What we save is then utilised in the zone competition and subsequently towards the Coke Games.
"The inter-house is a much awaited event in our school calendar as it brings the entire institution together, the communities and all the stakeholders. It creates excitement in school amongst the staff and students.
"The four schools combined “inter-school” competition also assists us to prepare better for the zone and national meet. It provides an opportunity to learn from colleagues and set the platform for bigger competition.
"It builds camaraderie amongst schools and the students, and we support each other right up to the Coke games. The friendly rivalry brings out the best amongst the athletes and thus helps them to uplift their performance."
He said Nakasi High School is a pioneer for the initiative.
"We have selected our squad for triple N Zone," he said.
"We will do our level best but being a small school with children from some of the most disadvantaged backgrounds, it is a mammoth task, but we will leave no stone unturned to give it our best," he said.
The four schools tallied their own results during the competition. The event took place on March 1, in Suva.
