Flyhalf stays true to team

- By ANASILINI NATOGA

ROOSTER Chicken Fijian Drua women’s flyhalf Merewalesi Rokouono made a remarkable decision this season, turning down a lucrative contract offer from Japan to stay with her Fijiana teammates for another season of the Super W competition and to secure a spot in the Women’s Rugby World Cup next year.

“I know it was good money in Japan, but I preferred to come home and be part of the Fijiana squad for the Super W this year and also to play for my second World Cup,” Rokouono said.

At 29 years old, Rokouono brings a wealth of experience to the squad, having commenced her rugby journey with the Fijiana 7s squad from 2016 to 2018 before transitioning to the Fijiana XV in 2022 for their inaugural Super W season.

In a memorable moment, Rokouono played a pivotal role in ending the Waratahs’ 20-game winning streak, dealing them their first-ever defeat with a commanding 29–10 victory in the same year.

Despite briefly exploring rugby league last year with the North Queensland side alongside her Drua teammate Vitalina Naikore, Rokouono opted to return home this year and forego her Japan contract.

She anticipates a tougher Super W competition this year.

“The competition last year was tough, and we are expecting a tougher competition this year.

“We know the Australian teams are preparing well and we should expect a good competition this Sunday against the Reds,” Rokouono said.

She is set to take the field in her No. 10 jersey this Sunday, leading her team with determination and skill.
