MESSAGE FROM THE CEO OF CONSUMER COUNCIL OF FIJI SEEMA SHANDIL

-

Bula Vinaka, and happy World Consumer Rights Day (WCRD) to all Fijians. Every year on March 15th, we celebrate this day as a global reminder of the fundamental rights and needs of consumers. It’s a chance to raise awareness about consumer protection measures, celebrate the progress made, and call for continued action to ensure a fair and safe marketplace for everyone. This year, we have scaled up the Consumer Council’s activities to empower consumers and advocate for their rights in an ever-evolving world, especially in the face of new technologies and business practices.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Fair and Responsible AI for Consumers.” In Fiji, the digital landscape is rapidly evolving, with artificial intelligence (AI) potentially reshaping various aspects of our lives, from how we shop and bank to how we communicate and access information in the near future. This technological advancement presents both opportunities and challenges, demanding a collective responsibility to ensure its fair and responsible use.

Imagine a future where AI personalizes your online shopping experience, detects fraudulent activities, or even tailors educational content to your unique learning style. Indeed, AI holds the potential to streamline processes, enhance efficiency, and empower consumers with greater control and choice. However, we must acknowledge the potential pitfalls that accompany this transformative technology. AI algorithms, if not carefully developed and monitored, can perpetuate biases, leading to discriminatory practices in crucial areas such as loan approvals, job applications, or even search results. Moreover, our access to information can be manipulated through AI-driven fake news or targeted advertising.

The realm of content creation is witnessing a surge in AI’s influence. From crafting marketing copy to generating news reports, AI models are becoming a familiar sight in many workplaces. This trend is driven by AI’s ability to analyze vast amounts of data and identify patterns. It can then leverage this knowledge to write content that is tailored to specific audiences and objectives. For instance, marketing teams are utilizing AI to generate personalized product descriptions or targeted social media posts. Journalists are exploring AI-powered tools to streamline data analysis and draft factual reports on financial results or sporting events. While human oversight and creative direction remain crucial, AI offers significant time savings and content consistency.

The impact of AI extends beyond content creation and delves into the very way we learn. AIpowered adaptive learning platforms are transforming education by personalizing the learning experience for each student. These platforms analyze a student’s strengths, weaknesses, and learning pace, then tailor the content and pace of instruction accordingly. Imagine a classroom where a student struggling with algebra receives additional practice problems at their own level, while another who grasps the concept can move on to more advanced topics. AI holds the potential to create a more dynamic and individualized learning environment for all.

In this new digital era, the Consumer Council of Fiji stands as a staunch advocate for consumer protection. We believe in the fundamental principles of transparency, accountability, and consumer education. Consumers deserve to know when they are interacting with AI and understand how it influences decisions that impact their lives. Businesses must be held accountable for the AI systems they implement, ensuring fairness and non-discrimination. Equally important is equipping consumers with the knowledge to understand, navigate, and challenge potential AI biases.

On this World Consumer Rights Day, let us all heed the call to action. Businesses, policymakers, educators, and consumers alike must work collaboratively to ensure the fair and responsible development and deployment of AI. Businesses should prioritize ethical AI practices, fostering transparency and partnering with consumer organizations to address potential biases. Policymakers are urged to implement regulations that promote ethical AI development and safeguard consumer rights. Educators play a pivotal role in integrating AI literacy into the curriculum, empowering students to become responsible digital citizens. And as consumers, let us educate ourselves about AI, question potential biases, and raise our voices against unfair practices.

As we envision a future where AI empowers all Fijians, let us remain vigilant in ensuring its responsible development and fair use for all. Together, we can build a society where technology serves humanity and enhances our lives. Vinaka vakalevu. Thank you very much.
