The Drua power

-

RATU Meli Derenalagi did not mince his words during the post-game interview after their back-to-back win against the Crusaders at Churchill Park in Lautoka last weekend.

Ratu Meli said they were out to “defend our turf”. These motivational and passionate words tell us the Drua are ready to defend our country, our people, our mana magic culture and our flying Fijian game of rugby.

This week is another big challenge against the Chiefs on foreign turf but believe me, whether it is in Fiji or abroad, the deafening sound of toso Viti toso will never end.

We are the Viti the way the world should see. Joka dina and all the very best to both Drua and the Fijiana teams. Show them to them.

An uphill battle in Hamilton

THE Swire Shipping Fijian Drua faces an uphill battle in Hamilton, as they face the Chiefs who are very strong at home and should resume normal service after last week’s surprise defeat in Queensland.

The Drua will march into Hamilton with confidence after their 20-10 victory over the Crusaders at Churchill Park. While the hosts are clear favourites, the visitors are backed to put up a spirited performance. Statistics favour the Chiefs who have won their last two matches against the Drua. Last year in round nine, the Chiefs thrashed the Drua 50-17. In 2022, the Drua fought hard at Churchill Park, but it was not enough, as they went down 35-34.

That exciting comeback was a joy to watch. The Chiefs boast big names in Aidan Ross, Samisoni Taukei’aho, Jimmy Tupou, Kaylum Boshier, Luke Jacobson, Damian McKenzie, Etene Nanai-Seturo, Anton Lienert-Brown, Shaun Stevenson, Josh Ioane and All Blacks Josh Lord and Quinn Tupaea. While the Drua have managed just one win in their opening three games, they fancy their chances of reaching the quarter-finals.

If the Drua can repeat their magnificent performance against the Crusaders, the Chiefs will find them a tough customer. The Chiefs are predicted to win, but the passion and pride within the Drua can turn the table. The Drua will be backed by a solid Fijian crowd in Hamilton, so I’m hopeful of a bright encounter and a massive result. RAJNESH ISHWAR LINGAM
